THIS TRIP CANCELLED
Round Mountain Arizona
MSA FIELD TRIP INFORMATION
MEET TIME: 10:30 AM Sunday December 26. TRIP CANCELLED. Your vehicle should be in good condition with good tires and be sure to check your spare.
END TIME: Tuesday Afternoon
LEADER: Steve Baker
VEHICLE REQUIREMENT: High clearance, preferably 4X4
MATERIAL TO COLLECT: Agate, Chert, Geodes, Obsidian
SCHEDULE: After departing Safford the first stop will be a quick one (15 minutes or so) at an outcrop along 70 to collect obsidian. From there we will make camp at Round Mountain. We will look for agate and geodes at this spot for the rest of the day.
Day 2 Monday December 27 - Steve Baker will escort us to another agate and geode field. The last time Steve was in this area was 8 years ago but indicates it was accessible with high clearance vehicle, preferably 4X4. After collecting it is back to camp.
Day 3 Tuesday December 28 - We will need to pack up early as the next stop is to an opal site just north of Duncan. It is an easy hike to the collecting area. If time allows Steve will be able to guide us to a few other spots. Steve needs to head home after lunch.
Both on Monday morning and Tuesday morning plan on getting up early (sunrise) to prepare for the day. This is especially true of Tuesday as we will breaking camp and hope to visit a couple different localities. No leisurely campfires with a full breakfast and cup of joe.
Also note that these areas are extensive collecting areas. A considerable amount of hiking about is a possibility. Be prepared with good shoes and adequate clothing for the anticipated weather. Bring plenty of water and a first aid kit as well. A hand held radio is a good idea. Cell phone coverage in this remote area is questionable.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION: This is a camping trip.
