SUPERIOR PERLITE QUARRY

This is a joint Mineralogical Society of Arizona (MSA) & Daisy Mountain Rock & Mineral Club (DMRMC) Field trip to the Superior Perlite Quarry for Apache Tears. There is limited space for 40 members total. 20 members from each club.

MEET TIME: 8:30 AM, Saturday, April 8, 2023 (meeting location near SUPERIOR, AZ and trip details will be sent via email AFTER Registration)

TRIP DETAILS: 

  • TRIP IS NOW FULL
  • (20) SLOTS AVAILABLE FOR MSA MEMBERS.
  • COUPLE MEMBERSHIP MUST REGISTER SEPARATELY FOR EACH FAMILY MEMBERS UNDER COUPLE MEMBERSHIP.
  • Please wear MSA NAME BADGE
  • See SAFETY REQUIRED BELOWHard hat, safety glasses, gloves, sturdy and toes covered footwear, long sleeve shirts & pants (clothing that covers the body).
  • Surface & Quarry Collecting Only.  
  • Quarry & Mine manager would like members to consolidate and carpool from Plant to Quarry to limit number of vehicles in Quarry. 
  • The manager of the Perlite Quarry has limited the total number who can go to 40.

LIMITED TRIP: (40)

  • (20) available slots for members of Mineralogical Society of Arizona. (MSA Show/Booth & Club Volunteers given priority)
  • (20) available slots for members of Daisy Mountain Club in Anthem. (Trip limited to Daisy MTN Show Volunteers)

TRAVEL NOTE: Please allow at least 1/2 hour more time than normal to get to the meeting spot. The delays were not noted on the state of Arizona highway condition website.

VEHICLE:  

  • Any vehicle will make it to the meeting location and to the Perlite quarry.
  • Quarry & Mine manager would like members to consolidate and carpool from Plant to Quarry to limit number of vehicles in Quarry.  

RECOMMENDED TOOLS & ITEMS:  Buckets, back pack, water, basic rock hunting tools, knee pads, trash grabber, lunch, small rock hammer, long-handled rake with 4-5 stiff tines.  

SAFETY REQUIRED: Hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, sturdy and toes covered footwear, long sleeve shirts & pants (clothing that covers the body). Sunscreen, hat, and extra water.    There will be a small number of hard hats and safety glasses for loan if you cannot get your own.

MATERIAL:  Apache Tears (obsidian or volcanic glass). A few of these translucent Apache Tears are some of the largest in the world.
