"A MINERAL COLLECTING TRIP TO MOROCCO”
Presented by David Joyce
* Meeting is on 3rd Thursday.
* Okay to bring and share refreshments.
* MEETING will be In-Person and Zoom.
Join us April 18th for presenter, and singer, David Joyce’s program “A Mineral Collecting Trip to Morocco.” David had the opportunity to participate in the 2012 Mindat.org conference in Marakech, Morocco, as a speaker. He participated in the mineral collecting trips before and after the conference and, as a result, was able to visit and collect at many classic Moroccan localities; Mibladen, Bou Azer, Sidi Ayed, Aouli, Sidi Rahal, etc. David’s presentation will regal us with many great scenic photos, the people he met, various localities and the minerals that he saw and collected while visiting Morocco.
David Joyce has been a mineral collector since he was 12 years old, growing up in rock and mineral bereft Scarborough (now part of Toronto), Ontario, Canada. He left Toronto at 19 years of age to attend the Haileybury School of Mines and upon graduation worked across Canada in the explosives and mining businesses. He later worked for mining and engineering contractors in the field of designing and building mining complexes his last real job was Vice President, Business Development for SNC-Lavalin Engineers and Constructors. David was an adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto for eight years, was past vice-president of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (CIM), past Chair of the Toronto Branch of CIM, Past President of the Walker Mineralogical Club and a founder of the Young Toronto Mineralogist Club. He has also served as director on the boards of several public and private companies. David Joyce just retired from his mineral business of over 40 years.
David now spends half of his years living in a winter home near Tucson, Arizona and has become well acquainted with many Arizona mineral localities and looks forward to becoming even more knowledgeable about Arizona minerals and localities. He is a member of the Tucson Gem and Mineral Society and volunteers at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show®.
Another of David’s passions is music! Together with his life-partner Carol Teal, they have performed as a duo in the contemporary folk music genre. About two-thirds of the songs that they play are our their own compositions with another third being traditional North American songs or contemporary music that they enjoy. They have mostly performed at the “folk music” types of venues at coffee houses, folk festivals, special occasions and assorted special concerts. They have completed three compact disc recordings “Simple Pleasures (2000)” and “Some Things You Do for Love(2005)” and “Has it All been Said Before(2013)”, all compilations of some of their songs. They are available, if you’d like a copy, for Can/US$15.00. If you would like to know more about this aspect of David’s life go to www.tealandjoyce.ca. As well, a number of the mineral collecting, geological and mining songs and others have been made into music videos and can be viewed on David K Joyce’s YouTube channel:
