The Mineralogical Society of Arizona is pleased to welcome Evan A. Jones for our September 17th program, "The Jones Collection of Arizona Minerals: A Few Favorites & Recent Acquisitions."
In this presentation, Evan shares highlights from his personal collection along with recent acquisitions, telling the stories behind the specimens, including several pieces originally acquired by his father, the legendary Bob Jones. The talk was inspired by an upcoming feature on the Jones Collection by Dr. Carl Francis, appearing in the January/February 2027 issue of Rocks & Minerals magazine.
Mark your calendars for a program by one of Arizona's most respected mineral experts.
Evan Jones currently serves on the MSA Board of Governors and is a longtime mineral collector and dealer, and the son of past MSA President and celebrated author Bob Jones. Evan began collecting minerals at age nine, and from an early age accompanied his father to museums, mineral shows, collecting trips, and dealer visits across the country. A graduate of the geology program at Arizona State University, he has been a full-time mineral dealer since 1986 and is currently co-owner of the fine mineral dealership Unique Minerals, Inc. His collection of Arizona minerals is regarded as one of the finest in the world.
Evan has attended every Tucson Gem & Mineral Show since 1981 and has received numerous honors, including the Walt Lidstrom, Miguel Romero, and Dick Bideaux trophies. He helped organize the TGMS "Arizona Mineral Treasures" exhibition for Arizona's Centennial at the 2012 Tucson Gem & Mineral Show and produced the first Arizona supplement to Mineralogical Record magazine, "Mineral Collections in Arizona-I." He served on the advisory board of the University of Arizona's Alfie Norville Gem & Mineral Museum, is a founding member of the Arizona Mineral Minions, and sits on the board of the Flagg Mineral Foundation.
A prolific writer, Evan has contributed articles to Mineralogical Record, Lapis, and Mineralien-Welt, and has lectured throughout the country on Arizona and Mexican minerals, mines, and history. In 2021, Friends of Mineralogy recognized his article on the Milpillas Mine in Mexico as Mineralogical Record's Best Article of the Year.
The Mineralogical Society of Arizona is honored and proud to welcome Evan for this very special program, and we thank him for his extensive contributions to Arizona mineralogy, his leadership on the MSA Board of Governors, and his longstanding support of our society.
